That link read something like “Download ClamXav” and pointed to the real ClamXav site, but the Download button still redirected to the MacKeeper site. After a number of people (including me) criticized them for that in a public forum, they added an itty-bitty little link below the Download button that was nearly unreadable. In the past, at the end of that review, there was a big green “Download” button that actually redirected the user to the MacKeeper web site. The page that ZeoBIT has posted on that site appears to be a ClamXav review. ZeoBIT has purchased a very similar domain – – and has posted a “review” of ClamXav there. There is a free, and quite excellent, anti-virus program for the Mac called ClamXav. One of the features of MacKeeper is anti-virus protection. ZeoBIT has also, however, done something that shows conclusively that they have no ethics. (That’s not particularly believable, given the sophistication of their web site.) This is not particularly conclusive evidence of their lack of ethics, as it could simply be due to ignorance. Due to the extreme unpopularity of such advertising techniques, no reputable companies are currently using pop-ups. MacKeeper is frequently advertised using pop-up (or pop-under) windows, on a variety of web sites, that seem to be able to get past Safari’s pop-up blocking feature. My reasons for saying that are twofold.įirst, the company that makes MacKeeper (ZeoBIT LLC) has demonstrated some extremely unethical behavior. But that’s not why I recommend that all Mac users avoid it. I certainly do not find MacKeeper at all appealing. That said, MacKeeper does not fall into the same category of misunderstood software.

In part because of this, I understand that software is not worthless just because I don’t find it useful. Many of those who did not suffer from such problems did not understand the point of the software, and I got a lot of e-mail ridiculing my software as stupid. My main product at one point was a program that was designed to force the user to take periodic breaks, as a means for assisting with the prevention of repetitive stress injuries. Despite the fact that this software is not technically malware, though, Mac users should be alerted that it is not quite legitimate, either.Īs a former shareware developer, I do not throw such an accusation around lightly. I am leaving this article in place mainly for historical record.ĭuring the MacDefender outbreak earlier this summer, there were many programs with similar names that were confused with variants of that malware.

(Although it’s hard to tell, since still redirects to half a year later.) It’s anyone’s guess where MacKeeper will go from here, though I still believe that most of Mackeeper’s functions are either unnecessary or could be done better by free software. Most notably, since it was written, Zeobit has sold MacKeeper to Kromtech. This is a relevant security risk due to vulnerabilities found in still supported versions often being applicable to unsupported versions of OS X.August 26th, 2011 at 4:13 PM EDT, modified This leaves these versions of OS X unprotected from any security vulnerabilities that are found subsequent to support being dropped for those versions of OS X. Unsupported versions of OS X no longer receive security patches from Apple. Set the Sentry feature to scan common locations where external files enter the system, such as download and email folders (for example: ~/Downloads, ~/Library/Mail, and ~/Library/Mail/Downloads), and set up weekly scans to scan the entire system for any threats. The information provided below is important for users of unsupported versions of OS X:

If you are using an older version of OS X without the MAS and/or is no longer supported by Apple, install the version of ClamXav that includes the Sentry feature. If you're not going to use the Sentry feature, install the version from the MAS.

The issue does not occur if quarantine is not enabled.Īlso, there are two versions of ClamXav that are available.ġ) from the ClamXav website that includes the Sentry feature that provides user defined on-access scanning.Ģ) from the MAS that is less complicated to update due to the install location of the scanning engine but does not provide the Sentry feature. Quarantined emails are no longer accessible and it is somewhat of an annoying task to restore the folder to a functional state. The entire folder will be quarantined instead of only the single infected email. The specific issue occurs when the the quarantine feature is enabled and a piece of malware is found in an email ".mbox" folder. I do not know if it's still a problem, but there have been some data loss issues related to ClamXav.
